Nothing else on the road looks like a Hummer H1. Wide, angular and with a military presence impossible to ignore, it is the kind of vehicle that turns any trip into an expedition and every arrival into an event.

This 1996 example uses the 6.5-litre turbodiesel V8, a four-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive. Geared hubs lift the half-shafts for 406 mm of ground clearance, a central tyre inflation system is fitted and it can ford 76 cm of water. It shows 45,000 km.

Derived from AM General's M998 Humvee, it reached civilian buyers in 1992 after the Gulf War, with Arnold Schwarzenegger among its keenest advocates. Production ended in 2006 after 11,818 units.
