1970 was a landmark year for the model: the year of its major update, bringing the 1.6-litre 50 PS boxer engine, larger Type 3 tail lights, a new dashboard, Type 4 instruments and a four-spoke steering wheel. With a four-speed manual gearbox, it is driving at its purest, unfiltered.

The story begins in 1953, when Karmann in Osnabrück started the project and the Italian studio Ghia designed a coupé on Beetle underpinnings. Production began in August 1955 and the coupé ran until 1974, succeeded by the Scirocco.
